Wood Street and surrounds revitalisation and stormwater

We have lift off! We started construction of the permanent upgrade of Wood Street and surrounds from Monday 31 March 2025.

The work includes upgrading the stormwater network as well as constructing the permanent design for Wood Street, the old fire station site and the back carparking area and playground (behind Gringas). Our contractors for this project are HEB Construction.

June 2025

The weather has been making things tougher for the HEB team as they finish off the new back carpark, but it is almost complete! The carpark will be open for everyone to use from Friday 20 June.

The back carpark will provide around 76 new formal parking spots and will be open for the community to use before work starts on the northern side of Wood Street from Molesworth Drive to Fagan Place (outside Four Square, the Allied Service Station, and the Community Op Shop), the carpark area between Brewed As and the old playground, and the old firestation site. This second stage will take approximately six weeks to complete.

Molesworth Drive
HEB are finishing off a crossing on Molesworth Drive, just north of Wood Street. Expect two days of stop/go traffic on Monday and Tuesday (23 and 24 June); otherwise, work is being managed with a shoulder closure.

At the old fire station site
Starting Monday 23 June, HEB will be working in the old fire station site and it will be closed. Access to the new back carpark and parking between the medical centre and the shops is possible via Fagan Place. Please do not park in front of the temporary fencing as this may block accessways for the construction team.

On Wood Street
HEB will use a combination of daytime work and night works to complete both stormwater drainage and new kerbing and footpaths on the northern side of Wood Street, from Molesworth Drive to Fagan Place (outside Four Square, Allied service station and Mangawhai community opshop). Daytime work between 7.00am and 5.00pm will kick off from next week and night works will start in mid-July. Wood Street will remain open, and it will still be possible to access these businesses, but things might look a little bit different for a while with temporary fencing and road cones in place. During construction a new pedestrian accessway – clearly signposted – will be created to access the shops. Please move slowly and carefully around the area when walking, cycling and driving. If you are unsure about access, just ask one of the HEB team members or phone ahead and ask the businesses before visiting.

Background

In September 2019 the Mangawhai Business Association approached Kaipara District Council, to address issues relating to high levels of congestion, traffic issues, and pedestrian safety around Wood Street.

Since then, the Council has been collaborating with the Mangawhai Business Association and community, testing layout and design to create a vibrant, unique, warm and people-friendly place. The current interim design has been in place since December 2020. Using temporary materials has allowed features to be tweaked and changed throughout the testing period, informed by community and business feedback, vehicle data, and regular monitoring.

The project team have continued to meet with individual landowners, business operators, impacted residents and the Mangawhai Business Association to clarify the final technical layout, identify public and private boundary lines and make sure that due consideration is given to concerns or opportunities presented such as upgrading of premises/loading zones/deliveries.
